How Do You Test Metabolism?

If you want to lose weight or build muscle it is very important to know how many calories you need to maintain your weight based on your unique metabolism, so the amount of calories you need to lose or gain can be accurately determined. The metabolism test is a small hand-held device you breathe into while your nose is plugged. It takes about 10 minutes. It is not uncomfortable nor difficult to do – you just sit still and breathe.

The results of the metabolism test will be explained and compared to an equation to determine how efficient your metabolism is at the time of service. Your dietitian nutritionist will review these results with you at a nutrition counseling session and give you calorie and macronutrient goals (carbohydrates, fats, and proteins) to help you reach your weight, body composition, and health goals.

How do I prepare?

The metabolism measurement may be scheduled at any time but it is important to avoid caffeine and not eat, drink (water is OK) or exercise 4 hours before the test.

Requirements to get the most accurate results:

  • Do not eat or drink anything for at least 4 hrs. prior to your scheduled appt. except for water.
  • Do not exercise for at least 4 hrs. prior to your scheduled appt.
  • Do not drink caffeine or nutrition supplements for 4 hrs. prior to your scheduled appt.
  • Do not use nicotine for 1 hour prior to your scheduled appt. You can continue to take any prescribed medications.
