Kameka Barnes is a Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor in the state of Maryland. Kameka completed her graduate studies at Trinity Washington University earning a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. She obtained her Bachelorette of Science degree from the University of the District of Columbia, majoring in Speech Language Pathology. Kameka has provided experienced clinical supports and services to individuals challenged with mental health and substance abuse diagnosis. As a clinician Kameka believes that overall mental health wellness is obtainable as well as sustainable when individuals are offered professional supports and an opportunity to grow and develop.

Kameka is currently working as a Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor providing care with genuineness, unconditional positive regard, and considerable compassion. Kameka is skilled in providing counseling services to adults, children, and entire family units.  As a Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Kameka specializes in working with adults, families, and children with behavior modification, family therapy, grief and loss, trauma informed care, individual and group therapies, self-esteem building, developing healthy mind sets, and cognitive reframing. Kameka’s theoretical orientation is grounded in both the Person-Centered and Behavioristic approach to therapy. She has experience with providing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Bowen Family Therapy, Reality Therapy, and Structural Family Therapy.

Kameka has completed additional course work in Family Development and received credentialing from the University of Connecticut, Center for the Study of Culture, Health, & Human Development. Kameka enjoys working with families to assist them with understanding connectedness, cohesiveness, setting healthy boundaries, roles, and the importance of “being whole”, as individuals and within the family unit. Kameka believes that finding life meaning is important therefore she enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends, writing poetry and short stories, shopping, and helping others. She also understands that we as humans are “always striving to reach levels of self-actualization" and through this level of awareness, personal goals can be obtained.

Kameka appreciates and respects the thoughts and views of others and sees life as a constant learning and growth process, which she believes is primarily achieved through active listening and genuineness. She is encouraged by a quote by Maya Angelou which reads, “We delight in the beauty of the butterfly but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty. Kameka has a great appreciation for the growth process and remains dedicated to the clients she services to guide them towards achieving their personal, spiritual goals.
