Heidi Emmer, LCSW-C
Ms. Emmer is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW-C) in Maryland. She began working with children and adults in various settings such as private practice, hospitals, residential group homes and schools since 2001. She works with clients of all ages; from toddlers to older adults. She creates an emotionally safe environment for individuals to express their thoughts, feelings, and needs. Through learning to listen to feelings and sensations mindfully, rather than avoiding them, powerful personal change can manifest. Ms. Emmer works collaboratively with clients to find the cause of their emotional pains and recognize triggers to unwanted destructive habits. Utilizing strengths based therapy, Ms. Emmer will helps clients become more aware of the positive qualities inside them, and assists them in expanding the coping skills they already have. By working together, she helps people achieve their goals and grow internally.
With adults, Ms. Emmer uses techniques that best fit the unique individuals and circumstances she is treating. The typical modalities and methods used are psychodynamic, CBT, Family Systems, strengths-based therapy, mind-body techniques, imagery, and role play. When working with children, Ms. Emmer utilizes creative and active modalities including child-centered play therapy, art therapy, and sand tray therapy. She also works with parents to involve them in the treatment process. This allows children to heal more effectively and generalize their gains to the outside world. Ms. Emmer uses theory from CBT, mind- body therapy, imagery, and attachment therapy to help children achieve their goals. Also, she has specialized training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EDMR) therapy.
